GALLOWAY TWP. There is no NJ Transit train station on the Atlantic City line between Egg Harbor City and Absecon, but in the municipality flanked by these two towns, momentum is starting to build for a stop specifically serving the airport Atlantic City International.
As recently reported by NJ.com, NJT is partnering with the South Jersey Transportation Authority on a feasibility study and potential design for a station at the north end of the airport.
Lauren Moore, president of the Atlantic County Economic Alliance, said the proposed station is just one piece of the South Jersey public transport puzzle.
Moore is also part of the new Atlantic City Rail Line Coalition, which plans to increase its visibility in the region during next fall.
“The proposed rail station in Galloway is great and we are supporting it, but we are focused on ridership,†said Moore. “By increasing ridership, we’re going to be able to work with NJ Transit to increase service along the line, and we would really like to see increased service. More predictable and reliable service.”
As Moore says, infrastructure upgrades, while effective, cost money. Making an effort to increase ridership does not.
And the Coalition’s intention to have NJ Transit’s ear isn’t meant to be a nuisance, according to Moore.
“We want to be your partner to increase ridership,†he said. “We’re not going to be a critic and just sit back and shoot. We want to be part of the solution.”
The Coalition, which has recruited the Greater Atlantic City Chamber of Commerce as its lead partner, believes that transit-oriented development is helping the economy but also the environment, by getting cars off the road.
If it makes people fly more easily, Moore said, it’s also a positive.
“We’ve been keeping an eye on a station to serve the Atlantic City Airport for some time, and the good news is we have a developer ready to move forward,†he said.
Keeping track of flight departures and arrivals could also better regulate, and possibly expand, the entire Atlantic City Line program.
“The last train leaves the station back to Philly at 10:50 pm-11pm,†Moore said. “It doesn’t work after 11 am. Atlantic City is a 24/7 city.”
The South Jersey Transportation Authority did not respond to a message left by New Jersey 101.5 last week seeking comment on this story.
