Australia appoints new Ambassador to Turkey

Australian Foreign Minister Marise Payne announced the country’s new ambassador to Turkey last week.

According to the announcement, Mr. Miles Armitage is Australia’s next Ambassador to Turkey and will also be accredited to Georgia and Azerbaijan.

“Our relationship with Turkey covers a wide range of areas, including ANZAC Day commemorations, security cooperation and participation in the G20 and MIKTA forums.

“Our economic relationship with Turkey continues to strengthen, with bilateral trade valued at nearly $ 2 billion in 2019-2020,” Payne added in his announcement.

Australia and Turkey also enjoy strong people-to-people ties, with around 73,000 Australians claiming Turkish ancestry.

“We have positive bilateral relations with Georgia and Azerbaijan. We cooperate on international security matters with Georgia and support its sovereignty in the face of significant challenges. “

Mr. Armitage is a career senior executive at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and was most recently Australian Ambassador to Jordan. He previously served overseas as Australian Ambassador to Timor-Leste. Deputy Head of Mission, Embassy of Australia, Philippines as well as postings in New York and Islamabad. He was also an ambassador for the fight against terrorism

Mr. Armitage holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honors); Diploma in Museum Studies, University of Sydney; and a degree in Foreign Affairs and Business from the Australian National University.
