Experts say HV may see turkey shortage this Thanksgiving

0

Halloween is still a few weeks away. Does that mean it’s too early to start thinking about Thanksgiving? I don’t think so, and it’s nice to know a little earlier that you might be facing a problem this Thanksgiving. And I’m not talking about whether you should invite your old Aunt Velma over.

I’m talking about turkey. Even though I’m not a huge turkey fan, I realize the importance of having one on your Thanksgiving table. This can be a problem this year, especially if you are planning a small Thanksgiving celebration. It looks like finding a little turkey won’t be easy this year.

Business intern reports that for several reasons, finding a smaller turkey could be a problem. First of all, little turkeys are in demand again as people schedule smaller meetings with the pandemic still affecting us. Not to mention the labor shortage that affects just about everyone and everything.

Consumer reports says you should be able to find a turkey, but finding one under 16 pounds won’t be easy, especially a fresh one. Hmmm. I never cooked a turkey over 14 pounds, and even then I had leftovers. I know I don’t want to eat turkey for 5 days. So what is a person who is hosting a small gathering to do?

If you are planning to downsize your celebration this year, you might want to think about picking up your turkey a little earlier than usual, or at least pre-ordering it well in advance. Here in the Hudson Valley there are a few places to pick up a fresh turkey, including Quattro agricultural store in Pleasant Valley and Fish slaughter farms at Fishkill.

Hopefully, getting a turkey for this year’s Thanksgiving dinner won’t be a problem for you, but it’s good to be prepared just in case. Have a great Thanksgiving, and it’s been fun talking about turkey with you.
