More than past races, it’s really a sprint.

For the first time in F1, sprint qualifying belongs to Red Bull and Max Verstappen after the sport’s hugely entertaining first foray into a new qualifying format for Sunday’s race. Lewis Hamilton started the day from pole position, but started slowly, clearing the way for Verstappen to clinch pole:

The grid for the sprint qualifying session on Saturday was established with the qualifying session on Friday; Usually the second practice session, a sprint qualifying weekend means that the typical training FP1-FP2-FP3-Q is replaced by FP1-Q-FP2-SQ on Friday and Saturday.

Additionally, the top three riders will rack up points to finish on a metaphorical podium: Verstappen takes three points in the Drivers’ Championship for Sunday’s race, while teammates Mercedes Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas take second and third place respectively.

In the end, pole position didn’t matter for Lewis Hamilton, who was dominated and passed by Red Bull’s Max Verstappen.

Formula 1 calendar 2021

Formula 1 returns in 2021 with a schedule of 23 zaftig races, starting with the Bahrain Grand Prix on March 28 and ending with the usual Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on December 12.

Canada’s GP has been canned as the country continues to grapple with coronavirus issues, and F1 has added the Styrian GP in its stead. The GP of France advances by a week to June 20.

The race originally scheduled for October 3 in Singapore was also canceled, with the Turkish GP joining the program for the same date. This race takes place on the Istanbul city circuit.

The Portuguese Grand Prix returns for its second consecutive race after a 22-year absence. The Saudi Arabian Grand Prix will also take place at the Jeddah Street circuit, scheduled for December.
