Dayton, WA. – The Green Ridge Fire burns on steep, rugged terrain in the Pomeroy Ranger District, about 30 miles east of Walla Walla, Washington. Values at risk include structures, the Mill Creek watershed, wilderness and nearby recreation areas.

The Columbia County Sheriff has issued a Level 1 evacuation notice for a large area north of the blaze. Level 1 means BE READY for a potential evacuation. Residents should regularly monitor emergency service websites and local media for information. The notice and the map are published on the Inciweb and Facebook sites (see links on the right).

Yesterday, firefighters completed protective measures for the structure on the Oregon Butte lookout. The fire spread generally south and southeast, over West Butte Ridge, east of Turkey Creek.

Today crews cut, clean and shred vegetation, and continue to lay pipes to provide water to reinforce indirect fire lines along Kendall Skyline Road and Route 4608 to the south and east. west of the fire. Line scouting and locating continues east and north to identify landscape features, such as trails and areas without vegetation, where the indirect line of fire will be most likely to contain fire. Teams will continue to improve the protection of the structure around the Godman Guardhouse and the Little Turkey Tail Residential Recreation Area. When the terrain and fire behavior allow crews to engage safely, firefighters will directly limit the spread of fire using helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft.

On July 16, 2021, Umatilla National Forest implemented a forest-wide closure throughout Umatilla National Forest. The forest is closed due to extreme fire danger and several fires in the forest. Additional information on this closure is available on the Forest website.
