Letter: Falmouth Community Supper canceled, may be revised

Since 2008, the Falmouth Religious Community has hosted an annual citywide Harvest Community Supper in the Falmouth Congregation Hall, providing good humor and a free roast turkey dinner to residents of Falmouth.

The annual supper grew in number every year. In 2019, over 600 Falmouth guests were served by more than 250 volunteers from churches, the Falmouth Food Pantry, Boy Scouts, Brownies, high school students, city and legislative leaders and pantry patrons. Free will donations from guests to the Falmouth Food Pantry have been of great help to the pantry’s annual budgets.

In 2020, however, the pandemic precluded an in-person dinner. Instead, the community of Falmouth did what they could to provide dinners for people in their homes, with the Boy Scouts delivering 200 roast turkey dinners (made by Rivalries in Falmouth, who also donated 200 desserts ) homebound residents and churches creating an online community. ‘Spectacle’ of performances from the talented residents of Falmouth which we can watch at home while eating our own dinners.

By October 2021, Falmouth’s religious community hoped the pandemic was over and that they could once again host an in-person community dinner. Alas, it was not to be. The pandemic is still with us, and dinner 2021 must be canceled for everyone’s health and safety.

The churches will consider whether they will need to provide a new way for us in Falmouth to “break bread together”. Perhaps the dinner will become an outdoor event held in warmer weather or will consist of smaller events and by reservation.

Many thanks to The Forecaster for covering the dinner each year and for posting this notice to the community of Falmouth regarding the cancellation of the dinner. We hope that in the future there will be a new model. In the meantime, we hope that residents will continue to financially support the important work of the Falmouth Food Pantry; donations can be mailed to 271 Falmouth Road, Falmouth.
