Loretta Lynn’s former KY home [VIDEO]

I’m a to-do list type. I even made a series of them on this site. I will never check everything unless I stop adding more. And that doesn’t seem to be an option.

LORETTA LYNN’S FORMER HOME IS ON MY BUCKET LIST

But it’s not like some of the items on this list are impossible to do; I just have to DO them. And one of those “must do” items is to visit Loretta Lynn’s former home in Butcher Holler, Kentucky. It’s the legendary place, but the name of the town is Van Lear.

My parents visited me there a long time ago, but I haven’t made the trip yet, although I rode quite close to it in the late 1980s.

Until I was an adult, I had no idea Butcher Holler wasn’t a town – this despite having heard the icon’s classic “Coal Miner’s Daughter” a million times, and one of the song’s lyrics mentions the Van Lear Coal Mines.

LORETTA LYNN — ICON OF COUNTRY MUSIC AND POP CULTURE

I have long admired Loretta Lynn and almost met her in the 1990s when I performed her show at the Executive Inn. There were a lot of fan club members there and his time was precious. And, of course, the movie starring that stunning Oscar-winning performance from Sissy Spacek will always be one of the best biopics ever made.

A TOUR OF LORETTA LYNN’S VAN LEAR HOUSE

So, on the legendary country star’s 90th birthday, I’m joining you on a tour of his former home in Eastern Kentucky.

THE REST OF VAN LEAR, KENTUCKY

If you decide to take this road trip and visit Loretta’s former home, don’t miss what you’ll find nearby. The Paintsville Tourism Website “paints” an impressive portrait of this part of the world, and for good reason… it is.

There’s Webb’s General Store which was owned by Loretta’s brother Herman until his death in 2018.

You will also most likely enjoy the US 23 Country Music Highway Museum which exists thanks to all the extraordinary superstar talent that has emerged from the area, in addition to Loretta. I’m talking about people like her sister Crystal Gayle, Dwight Yoakam, Patty Loveless (Loretta’s cousin), the Judds, Keith Whitley and many more.

The best part is that you will be in the beautiful Eastern part of Kentucky. These mountains, these lakes. Absolutely unbeatable.

Happy birthday, Loretta Lynn. Thank you for nine awesome decades AND for a starting point from which I could brag about your beautiful hometown.
