Mo. Dept. of Conservation reports final number of deer harvests: nearly 300,000

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KFVS) – The 2021-2022 deer hunting season ended Jan. 15, and the Missouri Department of Conservation announced a preliminary total harvest of 293,670 deer.

Of the deer harvested, 143,049 were antlers, 26,599 were bucks, and 124,022 were does.

The top harvest counties for the entire deer season were Franklin with 6,392 deer harvested, Texas with 5,478 and Callaway with 5,452.

During the past season, hunters harvested 297,214 deer, including 140,855 antler bucks, 28,652 button bucks and 127,707 does.

“This year’s total harvest was slightly lower than last year and about 3% higher than the previous five-year average,” said MDC Cervidae Program Supervisor Jason Isabelle.

“We’ve seen an upward trend in deer harvest across the state for the past eight years or so,” Isabelle said. “The deer population has continued to increase across much of southern Missouri at the same time that we have seen population recovery in most counties affected by the severe hemorrhagic disease outbreak that occurred. in 2012.”

Deer archery results

According to preliminary MDC data, hunters checked 60,834 deer during the 2021-2022 deer archery season, making it the third highest ever archery deer harvest. recorded.

The top counties for archery deer season were Jefferson County with 1,563 deer harvested, St. Louis with 1,368, and Franklin with 1,274.

The deer hunt ended with the end of archery season.

The top counties for the fall archery turkey season were Franklin with 69 turkeys harvested, Jefferson with 67, and Callaway with 61.

The fall bow turkey hunt also ended on January 15.

Hunting incidents

The Missouri Department of Conservation reported four gun-related hunting incidents during deer season, all self-inflicted and three non-fatal including one fatal.
