Friday is shaping up to be a big day in small, historic Oakland, with the reopening of Skog Restaurant and the smooth opening of The Turkey Hall event center around the corner.

Skog’s, located at 115 Locust St., has been closed since mid-May as owner Vince Gaeta recovers from a broken foot and he and his wife, Katrina, a co-owner, have hired more staff. Gaeta said he hired nine additional employees to help manage the large number of customers who visit the restaurant. Among the nine new hires are a VIP Services and Events Coordinator, an Entertainment Director and a Deputy Chef.

“It all fell into place quickly,” said Vince Gaeta. “Breaking my foot might have been the best thing that has ever happened to me. “

Skog’s will reopen for dinner on Friday. Along with this reopening, the Gaetas invited a few select people to the smooth opening of The Turkey Hall, located at 121 NE 2nd St.

The Gaetas has completely renovated The Turkey Hall with a western style theme.

Turkey Hall will offer buffet meals Friday and Saturday starting at 4 p.m., with a deli, homemade breads, smoked meats, poultry, Italian coffee and a dessert bar and more. There will also be a market, wine bar and tastings.

On Friday there will be live music starting at 7:30 p.m. with the Trip Wire band playing classic rock.

To introduce The Turkey Hall to the community and to those who have just passed by, there is now a billboard on Interstate 5 announcing the location of the event. The notice board is located three miles before the Oakland exit on the highway.

Skog’s caused a sensation when it opened last summer on the site of the former Tolly’s restaurant. It’s housed in a brick building dating from the 1890s and surrounded by other historic brick buildings in downtown Oakland, which together have listed the neighborhood on the National Register of Historic Places.

Tolly’s closed in November 2019 and the building remained closed prior to Skog’s opening in August 2020.

Skog’s and Turkey Hall share a common outdoor area.

The Gaetas were jostling each other this week to get everything ready for the big weekend. Vince Gaeta said he was traveling to Sonoma County, the heart of California’s wine county, to purchase precious wine and a large wheel of dry cheese.
