Russian superyacht Polaris leaves Malta

Polaristhe superyacht belonging to a Russian multimillionaire of Maltese nationality, was photographed on Saturday leaving the Grand Port, bound for Turkey.

The 70-meter vessel owned by Maxim Shubarev, chairman of Setl Group, a major Russian construction company based in St Petersburg, raised eyebrows as it docked in Vittoriosa on Friday.

But on Saturday night it was caught leaving port and by 7 p.m. was well on its way to Turkey, according to the web-based Vessel Finder tracking app.

Polaris tracked by web application, Vessel Finder.

The international community is currently pressuring Vladimir Putin’s allies through widespread sanctions, with European Parliament President Roberta Metsola saying European ports must be closed to superyachts owned by wealthy Russians.

Shubarev, who obtained Maltese citizenship in 2018, does not appear to be on the list of EU-sanctioned oligarchs and was not on board Polaris when he entered Grand Harbour.

The EU has imposed sanctions on 680 people and 53 entities linked to Russian President Vladimir Putin following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
