ABOUT THE PROGRAM:

Sewer cleaning is carried out with a high pressure jet of water through a hose using different nozzles adapted to the type of cleaning of sewer pipes (roots, grease, etc.). Debris washed from the pipe is collected in another manhole by a suction pipe or other means. The equipment used is called a Vactor (vacuum) truck and you may have seen them before or in your community.

During the cleaning process, sewer lines may develop air pressure or a partial vacuum due to the cleaning process. Usually any excess air pressure or vacuum will dissipate through the plumbing vents. But sometimes, in some cases, air pressure can escape through toilet, floor, sink, bathtub or shower drains causing water to splash or, a vacuum cleaner can sucking water out of the device’s traps, causing an unpleasant odor. This is called a “refoulement”.

What can I do to prevent “backflow” into my home when cleaning into nearby sewers?

To minimize the risk of “backflow”, cover all floor drains with plastic and place a weight over the plastic, cover all toilets with plastic and close the lid over the plastic, and for odors, run water. water in each siphon to fill the siphons.

The actual cleaning process from manhole to manhole doesn’t take too long, although you may see equipment in the area for longer periods of time due to the setup and teardown of the equipment. Cleaning that could affect your home should take no more than a few hours.

What to do if you experience a “backfire”?

As an important first step, please contact LFUCG operators immediately at 311. This will trigger an investigation which will involve a contractor’s team foreman (or designate) visiting your home to confirm if the cleaning was the cause. If necessary, the contractor will carry out a quick and thorough cleaning. This will require removing all debris, cleaning surfaces with a soapy solution, and disinfecting hard surfaces with a dilute bleach/water solution. Regular household cleaning products are sufficient. Rubber gloves are recommended.

Typically, recovery from a “back-up” event is simply removing all debris and cleaning any toilets, sinks, tubs, and showers that may have been impacted. You can then continue normal use.
