Animal Control makes the bird unharmed

When it comes to turkeys, most people are familiar with the ones you’ll find on your plate at Thanksgiving dinner.

A trip to the local liquor store might even reveal the existence of a Wild Turkey in liquid form.

But in a rare case, residents of Port Lavaca have spotted our community‘s wild turkey roaming the town, roaming past homes and businesses.

After driving through town uninvited, local animal control was called to capture the bird for its own safety. Although the bird’s presence is an oddity, the main theory is that it somehow broke away from its natural habitat. After capturing the bird, it was released further out of town.

“We picked up the bird and moved it to a wooded area,” Port Lavaca animal control officer Tracy Horejsi said. “We get a lot of deer from there, and sometimes pigs, but that’s a first for a turkey.”

Locals have spent much of the past week updating locations where they’ve seen the wild bird. The turkey was seen visiting a number of businesses and landmarks in the city.

No name has been suggested for the bird by members of the social media community.

Wild turkeys are a native species in Texas and can be found throughout North America, but they generally avoid cities and places with large concentrations of humans. Due to their excellent eyesight and hearing, they are difficult creatures to hunt, and even rarer to see around people.
