ISTANBUL, Feb. 1 (Xinhua) — Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Tuesday that his country intends to strengthen cooperation and solidarity with Lebanon in a wide range of fields.

Erdogan’s remarks came during a joint press conference with visiting Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati in the Turkish capital, Ankara.

The Turkish president noted that his country considers the problems and achievements of the Lebanese people as its own and is ready to lend its support to the reform efforts of the Lebanese government.

The trade volume between Turkey and Lebanon increased by about 80 percent to reach 1.8 billion US dollars in 2021 despite the pandemic, the president pointed out.

“We discussed the measures that can be taken to increase this figure,” he added, noting that Turkish companies are ready to undertake major infrastructure projects in Lebanon, including the reconstruction of the port of Beirut.

“I think Turkish products are suitable and attractive for the Lebanese market in many respects such as price, quality and transport costs,” Erdogan added, noting that his country also wants to diversify the products it imports. from Lebanon.

According to Erdogan, the Turkish airline Turkish Airlines is offering a 20% discount on all flights to Beirut valid until the end of February to stimulate tourist activities.

For his part, Mikati said that bilateral relations will continue to develop on solid foundations.

He noted that Turkey and Lebanon would take strong steps to improve their relations in a wide range of areas, including politics, economy, trade and tourism.
