VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – While you might be visiting a few more people for Thanksgiving this year compared to last year, many vulnerable people don’t have that option. The Union Gospel Mission will distribute hundreds of pounds of food throughout the weekend to those living in homelessness and poverty.
For Nadia Tchoumi, head of media relations, this is the mission’s second pandemic Thanksgiving with COVID-19 protocols.
“We know it’s been tough for people, so we’re looking forward to that day and just connecting with people.”

Tchoumi says they would normally have more than 100 volunteers to lend a hand this time of year, but they have to keep things light due to COVID restrictions.
“You’re going to see a handful, just a few volunteers here on site, serving dinner through the door. “
Meals, which include turkey, vegetables, potatoes and gravy, will be served take-out to follow health guidelines. The mission will also distribute gift bags with dry socks and other essentials.
Tchoumi says the tradition of turkey dinner is a very important time of the year.
“Look at these key times throughout the year, when people are usually with their family and usually have friends, but in this community we know there are a lot of people who are struggling with isolation and n ‘have no one at this time of year,’ she said.
The service starts on Saturday and continues throughout the weekend.
“We are really looking forward to that day when we can have everyone inside the mess halls. “
