Work on Turkey Mountain Trail to Begin in Mid-November | Politics

Don’t minimize the moment. Long a hugely popular but largely under-maintained natural asset, Turkey Mountain has garnered love and attention for a long time. Friday’s event was an opportunity for local officials to remind the public that better days are ahead with the implementation of Turkey’s mountain master plan.

“The trails here are kind of washed out, and they kind of exist where people start to walk,” Jones said. “But having a maintained, durable trail system that stands up to a lot of use and doesn’t erode and that sort of thing is going to be a life changing drama.”

Phase 1 of the project – construction of 12 miles of multi-use trails spanning 475 acres – begins November 15. Progressive Trail Design, one of the companies responsible for making Bentonville, Arkansas the mecca of mountain biking and hiking, gets the job done.

“We just want people to know that your favorite track is probably not completely deleted,” said Jason Stouder, director of planning for Progressive. “It can improve a bit; it may change a bit; but you are not going to lose the wilderness of Turkey Mountain.

“Turkey Mountain will remain wild, yet it will have a trail system that will also be safe and navigable for users.”

Stouder stressed that the 646-acre mountain will not be closed to the public during the trails project – just the particular trail his teams are working on at one point. And once a trail is completed, it will be reopened.
